How To Reverse M-pesa Transaction

M-pesa is a person to person payment system that enables one to transfer money, withdraw money and deposit money to a digital wallet. You will need a Safaricom registered line in order to access the M-pesa services. Sometimes while making a transfer of funds from one person to another, there is likelihood of making a mistake and end up sending money to the wrong number.

You can reverse the transaction and if the person to whom you have sent money to by mistake has not withdrawn the cash, the money will be reverted back to you.

How To Reverse Money Sent To Wrong Number

Immediately you realize you have sent money to the wrong M-pesa line, you can reverse the transaction by following these steps.

Step 1: Get the transaction code on the money you sent. Go to the messages and copy the Mpesa message you received when you made the transfer. Tap and hold the message until the copy option. You will copy the message to the clipboard.

Step 2: Go to messages and create new message. Tap and hold on the message body until the paste option appears. Click on paste and the message which you had coped previously will be pasted on the message body

Step 3: Send the message to 456. You will get a notification from Safaricom that they have received your request and are working on it.

The reversal process may take a few hours. You will also receive a refund of M-pesa charges that had been deducted when the transaction was initiated. Where the funds have already been withdrawn by the recipient, you will get the notification that the money cannot be reversed.

It also allows you to confirm the name of the agent when withdrawing money from your MPESA account. The service is also be available for Paybill (payment) and deposits for M-PESA agents.

All registered M-pesa lines are automatically opted in to Hakikisha service for name verification. However, one may opt out of the service by dialing *234#
